Travel days

I'm very fortunate in that I don't really have a set routine. There is a cost to that, of course. Routines are very efficient. The trade off is that they can be monotonous. I trade that savings of time, given my wealth of it, for a more mentally engaging process with my day.

I'm rarely in the same place, so I can't have anything like a commute, and unlike people who live in houses, my day is greatly impacted by the weather. So I spend awhile every morning figuring out what I'm supposed to do that day.

There are some elements of routine in my day though. Just like at home, I generally eat the same breakfast every day (3 eggs, 2 slices of bread, then a bagel with peanut butter, then some fruit). I also always have to take Arthur on a walk when we wake up. At the best places, I can let him go off leash. This morning was one of those, though he did have a bit of a staredown with a cow. They were separated by a wire fence, but that bovine wasn't backing down and wasn't going to take any shit from Arthur either, predator or not.

Speaking of Arthur, clever dog that he is, knows when I'm getting ready to go and gets anxious to be put in the truck so as not to be left behind. He does fairly well on the long drives, but they can't be a lot of fun for him. They are even more boring than usual when you aren't driving, the radio doesn't make any sense to you, and you're nearsighted, such that a lot of the scenery is meaningless. I try to scratch behind his ears when he lays his head on the centre console. Most of the rest of the time, he perches it on the armrest of the door. He's much less into watching the world go by than Sophie. She's a more active copilot.

We're back on Pismo beach tonight. When I was last here, I was almost the only rig on the sand. But it's spring break now, so there are miles and miles of RVs, tents and campers. There are campfire dotted far into the distance tonight, but still the waves are almost the only thing you hear.
